Subproject 1b will install an approximate 4 MW / 4 MWh of storage capacity at the Honiara Power Station, adjacent to an existing 11kV switchboard where electrical integration will occur. Another 5 MW / 20 MWh BESS will be installed with grid-forming battery inverters at the Honiara East substation.

The approximately 1.0 MWp ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) array in Henderson will occupy 1.2 hectares of a 1.32 ha registered in the Honiara Land Registry as Lot 290 of LR 83/R, Parcel number 192-004-255 transferred to Solomon Power (SP) on 30 May 2022. SP ownership was reconfirmed by the Solomon Islands Registrar of Titles on 25 April 2023.

Who owns the Honiara substation?

Honiara sites Two SP owned and operating substations – Honiara substation and the Honiara East substation – will be installed with BESS together with grid-forming battery inverters. The Honiara sub-station was transferred to public ownership in 1978 with registration documents available to confirm this ownership.

SP, ADB and Entura are working together to prepare a solar energy investment program that is consistent with the Renewable Energy Road Map and SP Renewable Energy Development Program. To increase its renewable solar energy component, SP plans to build additional solar farms.

Who will carry out a consultation on the Honiara East substation?

Carried out by DC Social Safeguards team. The Honiara East substation is located 1 km north of the Henderson site, hence it is expected that similar consultations outcomes would arise. Nevertheless, further consultation with the surrounding community will be carried out by SP prior to issuing the tender for the construction contract.
